Papantonio: How Capitalism Has Failed Us

Protesters in Wisconsin have taken to the streets to protest Republican Governor Scott Walker and his disastrous plan for their state. These protesters have been at it since February of this year. But in other areas of the country, Republicans are working to strip us of our rights, but the streets are empty. We don’t have protesters shining a spotlight on the corruption in other parts of the country, and because of this, the abuse just keeps coming. That’s why my next guest is so inspiring – Justin Jones is only 17, and yet he is more politically active than most people in this country, and we were pleased to have him back on Ring of Fire with us recently.

Does anyone know that given most of Americans’ inactivity and complacency with the gov’t and corporations’ intertwined corruption, would Monsanto’s be to blame for creating addictive foods with trans-fat and saturated fat that often makes many Americans lazy? In other words, does Monsanto’s essential monopoly and stranglehold on the American food supply have some kind of chemical laced in the food that usually makes Americans lazy and complacent? Pardon me for sounding like a conspiracy theorist when it comes to Monsanto’s power in the American food supply leading people to be lazy and complacent…Of course, over in Greece, there probably isn’t a Monsanto’s since most food in Europe and countries along the Mediterranean are much better and healthier than the processed chemicals in the food in America. As the late Jack Lalanne (who passed away earlier this year) said, “if man made it, don’t eat it.”

All I know about Monsanto is that they make genetically modified seeds that farmers aren’t allowed to save a few of for the next year. Look up Percy Smelser, a Canadian farmer whose land was close to a Monsanto test farm. His crops were accidentally pollinated by Monsanto’s and Monsanto sued him, for non-payment for the seeds, for the natural pollination by insects that didn’t recognize man’s property lines. Monsanto also makes Roundup, an herbicide, that kills all plants except Monsanto’s Roundup-ready genetically-modified seeds. See the film Food, Inc. for more about how seed sharing programs are being eliminated by corporate genetically modified seeds. Monsanto and Cargill are the biggest agribusinesses.

I listened to Mike talking about “the 5 conservative judges: Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, etc. I agree with Mike, but wonder what if anything can be done about them since they are appointed for life. Have Supreme Court judges ever been removed from office? Ever? Mel Singer

In answer to your question… thousands of us protested during the Bush years… and we were totally ignored by the media. I went to a protest in Washington D.C. in 2005 where over 500,000 people showed up. When we got home and turned on our TV sets the news was showing Brittney Spears! Currently the Wisconsin protesters are being mostly ignored. Unless you could get whole cities out there… no one is going to notice. I think that’s why I feel protests are of little value anymore. It may have worked in the sixties, but the corporate media has learned to ignore us, keep the masses in the dark and just walk right over us for their own wealth and power… no problem.
