Papantonio: Romney’s Assault on Public Workers

A dismal jobs report for the month of May has Republicans chomping at the bit, telling us that, even though we’ve seen 26 months of consecutive job growth, Obama is still terrible at creating jobs and handling our economy. But when you look at the numbers, it’s the public sector – government employees like teachers, firefighters, police officers – who are losing their jobs at unprecedented rates. And a Mitt Romney presidency would only make their situation much, much worse, and Mike Papantonio spoke with Bryce Covert from The Nation magazine recently about what Romney would do to public sector employees.

The Rethuglicans must really be insisting that austerity is God’s will – regardless of the reality of what has happened over the past 30+ years. Lately, when I drive past shut down businesses, vacant buildings and lots, I’m thinking, “thanks, Reaganomics!”

Although the news says that the private sector has been creating more jobs than the public sector, on a personal note, I feel quite thankful to be working for the public sector for the past 5 years. If Romney is POTUS next year (God-forbid), how would he go about crossing the line and start firing public sector employees on the federal and local levels? Other than that, he really doesn’t have such a clear plan on creating jobs in America – just more of the Bush, Jr. policies on steroids.

For better progress, either Obama should stop giving so much lip service or the Republicans/Rethuglicans shouldn’t be such obstructionists doing the opposite of what Obama proposes. The Republicans/rethuglicans have been such contrarians for quite some time now.

…Earlier/recently on ROFR, I asked if there was any further coverage of OWS and other Occupy movements. The MSM doesn’t really seem to be covering the latest on them as they tend to focus more on celebrities like Adele’s pregnancy and TomKat’s divorce. Has there been any progress/traction made in the Occupy movements? It isn’t like the Occupy protesters have all given up and gone home in defeat, is it? Mike, RFK, Jr. and Sam ought to do more coverage of the Occupy movements and what the latest is on them.
